Mazak Applications Engineer Creates Non-Contact Brass Key

Download this COVID-Key DXF file to laser cut your own non-contact brass key to avoid touching surfaces during the pandemic

Due to the recent COVID-19 global pandemic, people are being more cautious of their surroundings. This is most prevalent when having to be in publicly shared spaces. But when you need to leave quarantine to get food or other essential items, you may have to touch surfaces in public places, like door handles or point of purchase keypads.

To help avoid contact with possible contaminated surfaces, Tyler Van Wyhe, Applications Engineer at Mazak Optonics Corp, has taken matters into his own hands.

Behold, the non-contact “COVID-Key.” This laser cut brass key is ideal for avoiding contact with surfaces when in public places. From opening doors, to pushing buttons on a gas pump or elevator, this key can come in handy to keep your hands less vulnerable to being exposed to germs. While this key can be cut from metals other than brass, brass metal provides the best protection against germs due to its antimicrobial properties. Antimicrobial properties have an inherent ability to kill harmful microbes quickly on the exposed surface. This makes brass the ideal metal to use for these non-contact keys.
