Get to know Anthony Romero, Applications Engineer

The software that laser-cutting machines operate on is important. Having qualified individuals available to support and guide operators if software issues arise is equally important. Mazak’s Software Engineers provide unparalleled software support by ensuring that customers’ machines are programmed to run smoothly. When a customer contacts the Mazak applications department for software support, Anthony Romero is one of the Mazak Software Engineers that will be happy to assist them. Anthony joined the Mazak team in 2020 as a software engineer and has transitioned into a new role as applications engineer.

Quick Q&A with Anthony Romero

What is your background involving laser machines and the fabrication industry?

“Prior to joining Mazak, I attended Carthage College for Physics and the University of Illinois at Chicago for Mechanical Engineering. During my time at Carthage, I was first exposed to light and laser fundamentals through my course work.”

“While at UIC, I had the opportunity to attend FABTECH, which gave me firsthand exposure to the metal forming, fabricating, welding, and finishing industries. FABTECH also introduced me to the many laser-cutting machinery and automation solutions that were out there.”

“In addition to my education, my father’s over 20-year work experience in the manual machining industry has been a great resource in understanding the industry.”

What is your current role at Mazak?

“My current role at Mazak is a Software Engineer. I assist customers with any Mazak Smart System issues they may have. This includes training new customers, installing software, troubleshooting, and acting as a resource for our customers. In addition, I also provide time studies for our sales team.” 

What is your definition of great customer service?Pikes Peak

“Great customer service is being able to help a customer solve any issues in the most efficient way possible. It is important to give a thorough and timely response to customers so that they can solve the problem at hand. It is also important to leave the customer satisfied and knowing that they have a resource whenever needed.”

What are your hobbies and interest?

“I love to play and watch sports, but soccer is my passion. I played competitive soccer in college and still play in recreational leagues today. One of my newest interests is traveling. Whether it be a quick or long trip, it is always nice to see and experience new things. One of my most memorable trips has been to Colorado, where I was able to hike up Pikes Peak.”

What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever visited?

“One of the most beautiful places I’ve been to was a Cenote (Sinkhole) near Cancun, Mexico. It was a memorable and unique place to visit while in Mexico. The dark freshwater pool was illuminated by the sunlight above. This was my first time jumping from a cliff as well!”
