Quick Q&A with Hank White

What is your background involving laser machines and the fabrication industry?

"I have been in the laser industry for over 25 years. My journey began as an operator at a small fabrication shop in my hometown. There, I ran my first laser, a 1995 Mazak 1500W Hyper Turbo. During that time, I learned to operate and program several lasers, punches, and press brakes. After about 5 years, I took a job at General Motors. It lasted only a year before the plant closed, but I learned an incredible amount about lean and JIT manufacturing. That brief time in large-scale manufacturing changed my perspective, and many of the strategies I use today stem from that experience. From there, I accepted a position as a Laser Application Engineer with a competing laser manufacturer. I spent 18 years with that company and took on many roles, including product and software management. In 2023, I decided it was time to move to a different company where I could use my experience to its fullest. Mazak stood out as the best option because of its people and products, and I gladly joined the team. The last few years have flown by, and I look forward to growing even more with team."

What is your current role at Mazak?

“My current role here is Laser Product Manager, and I oversee the Applications group, which includes the R&D, Pre-Sales, Post-Sales, Software, and Automation teams. My main duties include supporting new machine design, developing new technologies, improving existing processes, and providing customers with an unmatched solutions-based experience. I take great pride in my work and enjoy collaborating with each member of my team. Together, we can solve any issue and make a real difference for our customers. One of the most rewarding aspects of this job is seeing tangible results when our customers grow from a small startup into a thriving business and being involved at each step along the way.”

What is your definition of great customer service?

"Service is defined by the very people at Mazak who back the products we sell. Everyone here believes in quality work and collaboration to deliver the best overall customer experience. Keeping our customers up and running is everyone's top priority, and we give the same level of attention to all companies, regardless of size. We believe our customers should be treated like family, and that is exactly what we do. After many years on both sides of the service wall, I can say without a doubt that the Service Team here at Mazak is second to none!"

What are your hobbies and interests?

"I am lucky to be the father of triplets, and they honestly consume the majority of my time. That is the best part of my life, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Together, we go camping, take road trips, explore new places, or just hang out and watch movies. When I do have that rare time to myself, my main hobbies include astrophotography, grilling, woodworking, and working on motorcycles and ATVs. My happy place is designing or tinkering with mechanical things. I have always been fascinated by complex mechanisms, such as watches and engines, and I have a habit of collecting them or anything similar."

What fictional world or place would you like to visit?

"If I had to choose a fictional world to live in, I'd go with the Marvel Universe and be like Tony Stark. He has almost unlimited resources and technology and can design and build anything he sets his mind to. He also marries a redheaded Gwyneth Paltrow, which adds to the awesomeness. Aside from being taken out in End Game, I'd go with an epic multiverse return instead!"
